How to Read an Assignment

For the professor, a key to getting good student papers is designing the assignment well to give both direction and creativity.  For the student, a key to writing good papers is actually knowing how to read the assignment.  Many of us professors have our own “code” of key words, instructions, and expectations that we think are all too clear in our prompts.  But students don’t always know our code.
